A modeline is a per-file directive used by Vim to set editor options when a file is opened. It is usually placed in the file header or footer so the document can ask for specific formatting or editing behavior. That convenience is useful for trusted project files, but it also means the file itself can influence how the editor behaves.
In cyber security, modelines matter because any feature that turns file content into configuration expands the attack surface. A malicious file can hide unsafe settings or combine with other Vim features to steer parsing, plugins, or helper actions in risky ways. Defenders commonly disable modelines or restrict them on systems that open untrusted files, especially on admin workstations and analysis hosts. Treat modelines like input, not instructions you automatically trust.
