Model gating is a product design pattern where a feature is enabled only on specific hardware versions, even when several devices receive the same firmware or software update. The gate can depend on a chip revision, sensor set, memory size, or a device identifier checked by the operating system or companion app.
In cyber security, model gating matters because security behavior is not always uniform across a product line. A patch may arrive everywhere, but protections such as encryption support, biometric checks, microphone controls, or debug features may still differ by model. Attackers can use those gaps to target older hardware, unsupported variants, or features exposed only on certain revisions. Defenders should verify capabilities on each model, not assume that “updated” means identical. Testing should confirm what is actually enabled, how it is enforced, and whether app, firmware, and hardware checks can be bypassed.
