A model gateway is a layer that normalizes AI requests so applications can talk to multiple model providers through one interface. It can translate prompts and parameters, route traffic to different vendors, apply retries or rate limits, and keep the calling application independent from any single AI service.
In cyber security, this matters because the gateway becomes a control point for access, logging, data handling, and failover. If it is well governed, defenders can reduce vendor lock-in, enforce policy, and switch providers when a service is degraded or a contract changes. If it is poorly secured, the gateway can expose sensitive prompts, credentials, and routing rules, creating a high-value target for attackers. Real attacks and defenses often focus on this layer through misconfiguration, token theft, prompt leakage, abuse of fallback paths, and supply-chain risk. Secure gateways therefore need strong authentication, least privilege, audit logs, and tested escape routes.
