Mobile satellite services (MSS) are satellite-based communications designed for users on the move, such as ships, aircraft, vehicles, and field teams. They provide voice, data, and emergency links where terrestrial networks are unavailable, overloaded, or disrupted. In cyber security, MSS matter because they can act as a resilient backup channel for critical operations and incident response.
MSS also introduce a distinct attack surface. Adversaries may try to jam or spoof radio signals, misuse authentication, or compromise terminals and ground systems that manage access and routing. Because spectrum and network governance determine who can connect and how traffic is prioritized, control of MSS is not only a technical issue but also a security one. Defenders use monitoring, strong device authentication, hardened gateways, and spectrum management to reduce risk and keep communications available under stress.
