Mitigation evidence

Records showing what an organization did to reduce harm, correct issues, or prevent recurrence.

Mitigation evidence is documentation that shows what an organization did to reduce harm after a security or privacy issue, fix the root cause, or prevent it from happening again. In cyber security, this can include incident tickets, patch records, containment logs, configuration changes, access reviews, backup restoration reports, training records, and audit trails. The key point is not just that action was taken, but that it can be proven.

This evidence matters because attacks, breaches, and control failures are often judged by response quality as much as by the initial mistake. Clear records help incident responders verify containment, help defenders demonstrate due diligence, and help legal or regulatory teams explain remediation. In real cases, mitigation evidence can show that a vulnerable system was isolated, credentials were rotated, data exposure was limited, or a control gap was closed. Without it, an organization may look passive or unprepared even if it did act.
