Missing authentication for a critical function

A condition where sensitive actions can be reached without valid login checks.

This flaw exists when a sensitive operation, such as changing settings, starting a service, or executing a privileged command, can be reached without a valid login or authorization check. The application may expose the function through a web request, API call, or device interface, but fail to verify that the caller is allowed to use it.

In cyber security, this is dangerous because it removes the normal gate in front of high-impact actions. Attackers can abuse it to reconfigure devices, disable protections, extract data, or trigger code execution if the function controls a risky backend action. Defenders look for this issue during code review, API testing, and authenticated-versus-unauthenticated access checks. Good protection means enforcing authorization on every sensitive path, not just on the visible user interface. On networked appliances and admin panels, missing authentication often turns a small management flaw into a direct route into trusted systems.
