Minimum necessary

A privacy principle that limits access to only the data needed for a specific task.

Minimum necessary is a privacy and access-control principle that says a system, user, or process should see only the data required to complete a specific task. In cybersecurity, it is a core way to reduce exposure of sensitive information such as PHI, credentials, or internal records. If an attacker compromises a low-privilege account, minimum-necessary design limits how much can be stolen or altered.

Defenders apply this principle with role-based access control, scoped API tokens, segmented datasets, and tightly reviewed workflows. In AI-assisted document review, it means the model and human reviewers should receive only the fields needed for the job, not entire records by default. Weak enforcement can turn a simple workflow into a broad data leak through overly permissive cloud permissions, shared queues, or excessive logging.
