Microsoft SQL Server

Microsoft’s database platform, which can serve as a backend for WSUS in some deployments.

Microsoft SQL Server is Microsoft’s relational database platform. It stores and serves data for applications, enforces access controls, and supports transactional operations that keep shared systems consistent. In enterprise environments, it often acts as the backend for management services, reporting tools, and business applications.

In cyber security, SQL Server matters because it can hold sensitive data and sit inside a trusted service chain. If a management system such as WSUS uses SQL Server as its backend, the database becomes part of the control plane that decides what content is approved and distributed. Attackers may try to abuse weak authentication, misconfigured permissions, or relay opportunities to reach the database or the service account that uses it. Defenders should restrict SQL credentials, segment the database tier, disable unnecessary legacy authentication paths, and monitor administrative queries and service-to-service connections.
