Mesh resolution

The level of detail used in the computational grid that supports a simulation.

Mesh resolution is the level of detail in the computational grid used by a simulation. A finer mesh divides space into smaller cells, which can capture sharp changes in flow, heat, pressure, or stress more accurately. A coarser mesh runs faster, but it can smooth over important effects and produce misleading results.

In cyber security, mesh resolution matters whenever defenders rely on simulation to evaluate systems such as cooling, airflow, hardware design, or digital twins for critical infrastructure. If the mesh is too coarse, a model may miss hotspots, weak points, or performance bottlenecks that affect reliability and security. Attackers can also benefit from poor simulation assumptions when teams treat model output as proof instead of an estimate. Good practice is to choose a mesh that is detailed enough for the question being studied, then verify the result with testing and mesh refinement checks.
