Memory-resident malware

Malware that operates primarily in RAM, often reducing filesystem traces.

Memory-resident malware is malicious code that runs primarily in RAM instead of staying on disk as a normal file. Attackers may load it through reflective loading, process injection, or a small loader that decrypts the payload only in memory. Because the main payload may never be written to the filesystem, antivirus scans and disk forensics can miss important evidence.

This matters in cyber security because it reduces artifacts, speeds up execution, and can help malware disappear when a process ends or a system reboots. In real attacks, memory-resident implants are often paired with legitimate binaries, victim-specific loaders, or modular frameworks to make analysis harder. Defenders respond by monitoring process behavior, inspecting memory, correlating parent-child process chains, and looking for unusual module loading or network activity. File-based detection still helps, but it is not enough on its own.
