Mechanical switch

A physical input part that changes state through movement.

A mechanical switch is a physical input component that changes state through movement. When pressed, flipped, or slid, internal contacts open or close to create an electrical signal. Unlike touch or software-only controls, it depends on direct motion and a real contact change, which makes it easy to understand but also subject to wear, bounce, and dirt.

In cybersecurity, mechanical switches matter because they often control trusted actions: power, reset, boot mode, pairing, maintenance access, or tamper functions. If an attacker can reach the device, they may try to press a hidden button, hold a reset line, or use a switch to force a vulnerable startup state. Defenders also use mechanical switches as deliberate safeguards, such as hardware kill switches, chassis tamper switches, or isolated service controls. Secure design treats these parts as security-relevant inputs, not simple convenience features, because physical state changes can directly alter how a system boots, communicates, or protects data.
