Measurement error

The difference between a measured value and the true value.

Measurement error is the difference between a measured value and the true value. In security work, it shows up whenever tools estimate something imperfectly: network latency, packet loss, login frequency, file hashes, sensor readings, or model scores. Small errors may seem harmless, but they can distort thresholds, hide anomalies, or make normal activity look suspicious.

It matters in cyber security because defenders often act on measurements. An intrusion detection system with noisy inputs can raise false positives or miss real attacks. A malware benchmark can overstate accuracy if its measurements are biased. Attackers can also exploit measurement error by adding jitter, spoofing sensors, or shaping traffic so monitoring systems misread what is happening. Good defenses reduce error with calibration, repeated sampling, baselines, and confidence checks.
