Maxwell’s equations

Four equations that describe classical electromagnetism.

Maxwell’s equations are four classical equations that describe how electric and magnetic fields are created, change over time, and interact with matter. They are the foundation of electromagnetism and explain phenomena such as radio waves, induction, capacitance, and the way circuits radiate energy.

In cyber security, they matter because hardware is physical. The same field behavior that makes wireless communication possible also enables side-channel leakage, electromagnetic interference, and unintended antenna effects from cables, boards, and chips. Attackers can sometimes capture emissions to infer activity, while defenders use the same physics for shielding, filtering, grounding, and electromagnetic compatibility testing. Understanding Maxwell’s equations helps security engineers predict when a device may leak information through its EM signature or when a design may be vulnerable to jamming, fault injection, or poor isolation.
