Mass scraping

Automated collection of large numbers of web pages or links.

Mass scraping is the automated collection of large numbers of web pages, search results, or links. Attackers use scrapers to harvest usernames, emails, product data, pricing, URLs, or metadata at scale. Defenders use the same technique for threat intelligence, but in hostile hands it becomes a way to build phishing lists, map site structure, or copy content without permission.

In cyber security, mass scraping matters because it can expose data that is easy to overlook one page at a time but valuable in bulk. It also creates operational pressure: rate limits, bot detection, CAPTCHAs, redirects, and session checks are common defenses designed to slow or identify automated access. When a platform adds extra routing steps or link wrappers, it can make URL harvesting less direct and increase the cost of scraping tools. Security teams should monitor request patterns, user agents, and unusual navigation bursts to distinguish normal browsing from automation.
