Maritime situational awareness

The ability to monitor, understand, and react to activity at sea through sensors, reporting, and coordinated decision-making.

Maritime situational awareness is the ability to monitor, understand, and respond to activity at sea using sensors, vessel reports, communications, and coordinated command decisions. It combines radar, coastal cameras, satellites, AIS data, patrol reports, and operational intelligence to build a current picture of what is happening on the water.

In cyber security and maritime defense, this matters because many attacks and disruptions depend on confusion, delay, or poor visibility. A spoofed or missing AIS signal, a delayed alert from a ship, or a gap between port and coast-guard systems can hide hostile activity long enough for damage to occur. Good situational awareness supports faster attribution, safer routing, and better incident response for merchant vessels and coastal authorities. It also helps defenders spot unusual patterns, such as unexpected rendezvous, route changes, or low-signature drones and remote systems operating near shipping lanes. In hybrid threats, seeing the full operating picture is often the first layer of defense.
