A maritime operator is an organization that runs vessels, ports, terminals, or other maritime infrastructure. This can include shipping companies, port authorities, terminal operators, and firms that manage navigation, cargo handling, or related industrial systems. In cyber security, the term matters because these organizations often depend on a mix of IT networks, operational technology, and safety-critical equipment.
Maritime operators are attractive targets because a compromise can disrupt logistics, delay cargo, or affect safety and compliance. Attackers may abuse remote access, phishing, weak segmentation, or legacy systems to reach operational environments. Defenders focus on asset inventory, access control, network monitoring, patching, and separating business systems from vessel or terminal controls. In regulation, a maritime operator may have different security obligations depending on the facility, vessel, or waiver status, so cyber requirements should be checked separately from physical-security exemptions.
