Managed service

A provider-operated service that handles some or all of a customer’s IT or security functions.

A managed service is a provider-operated arrangement where a third party runs some or all of a customer’s IT or security functions. That can include network connectivity, firewall administration, endpoint monitoring, patching, identity controls, or incident response. Instead of owning every tool and process in-house, the customer relies on the provider’s platform, staff, and operating procedures.

In cyber security, managed services matter because they can improve consistency, speed, and coverage, especially for organizations that lack a large security team. They are common in defenses such as managed detection and response, managed firewalls, and secure networking. The trade-off is dependence: if the provider’s controls, accounts, or remote access are weak, attackers may target that shared trust relationship to reach many customers at once. Good governance, logging, segmentation, and a clear exit plan help reduce that risk.
