An MSSP is a third-party team that monitors and manages security on behalf of another organization. Instead of building a full in-house security operations function, a client can outsource services such as alert monitoring, log review, endpoint oversight, vulnerability tracking, and incident response support.
MSSPs matter in cyber security because they give smaller or understaffed organizations access to 24/7 coverage and specialist skills. In practice, they are often used by critical infrastructure operators, local governments, and small businesses that need help maintaining basics like patching, account monitoring, and backup checks. Attackers benefit when these functions are missing; defenders benefit when an MSSP can spot suspicious activity early, coordinate response, and reduce the chance that routine gaps turn into a breach. The model works best when roles, escalation paths, and access controls are clearly defined.
