Managed allowlist

An administrator-approved list of software or extensions permitted to run in an enterprise environment.

A managed allowlist is an administrator-controlled list of approved software, browser extensions, or other components that are permitted to run in an enterprise environment. It is usually enforced by policy, not by the end user, so security teams can decide what is trusted and what must be blocked.

In cyber security, managed allowlists matter because many attacks try to blend in as legitimate software. A malicious browser extension may look normal to users, but if it is not on the allowlist, the browser or endpoint management tools can prevent installation or execution. Defenders use allowlists to reduce exposure, limit unauthorized code, and support compliance. Attackers, in turn, often try to bypass these controls by abusing policy settings, tampering with installation paths, or making malicious packages appear approved. In browser-focused attacks, allowlist review is a key defense because it helps detect extensions that should never have been granted trust.
