Malware staging

The setup phase in which malicious software is placed on a target system before the main attack runs.

Malware staging is the setup phase in an attack when malicious code is placed on a target system before the main payload runs. Staging can happen through removable media, network transfer, exposed management tools, or by using an initial foothold to copy files onto the device. The staged component may be small and temporary, but its job is to prepare the environment for the real action.

In cyber security, staging matters because it often marks the point where an intrusion becomes operational. An attacker may use it to disable defenses, verify privileges, load a second-stage payload, or configure a machine for a specific task. In ATM attacks, for example, malware may be staged on the local system before the dispenser is triggered. Defenders look for staging indicators such as unexpected file drops, unusual device access, execution from removable media, and changes to boot or application integrity. Detecting staging early can stop an attack before the main payload is launched.
