Malware-free attack

An intrusion that relies on legitimate tools, credentials, or services instead of dropping malicious files.

A malware-free attack is an intrusion that does not rely on dropping obvious malicious files. Instead, the attacker uses legitimate tools, valid credentials, built-in operating system features, remote services, or trusted cloud functions to move through a target. Because the activity often resembles normal administration, it can bypass defenses that focus mainly on scanning binaries or detecting signatures.

This matters in cyber security because many modern intrusions are really behavior problems, not malware problems. Defenders look for suspicious combinations such as a successful login from an unusual location, sudden privilege changes, or remote command activity that does not fit normal operations. Common defensive measures include identity monitoring, endpoint telemetry, cloud audit logs, network flow analysis, and cross-correlation of alerts. Tactics like living off the land and valid-account abuse are classic examples of malware-free intrusion techniques.
