A magnetic switch is a key switch that detects movement with a magnetic sensor instead of relying on metal contacts closing and wearing out. In keyboards, this usually means the key’s position is measured by a magnetic field, which can make actuation smoother, more durable, and easier to tune than a traditional mechanical switch.
In cyber security, magnetic switches matter because they are part of programmable input hardware. They can support rapid actuation changes, macros, and custom profiles, which makes them useful for productivity but also relevant in trusted computing environments. Attackers may abuse any programmable peripheral to trigger unauthorized actions, while defenders should verify firmware, configuration tools, and reset options. As with other smart devices, the security risk is often not the switch itself, but the software and settings that control it.
