MAECI is the acronym for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. It is the central government body responsible for Italy’s diplomatic relations, consular services, and international coordination. In Italian public discourse, the ministry is also often referred to by the name of its Rome headquarters, the Farnesina.
In cyber security, MAECI matters because ministries of foreign affairs are high-value targets. Their systems may hold diplomatic correspondence, travel and identity data, and sensitive internal communications. Attackers may use the name MAECI in phishing lures, reconnaissance, or impersonation attempts to make messages look legitimate and to reach staff, contractors, or partner agencies. For defenders, using the correct institutional name helps with log analysis, incident classification, asset scoping, and coordination across mail security, identity controls, and network monitoring. When a report says MAECI, it usually points to the organization being targeted, protected, or investigated, not to a specific technical system.
