Machine-readable opt-out

A rights-reservation signal formatted so automated systems can detect and respect it during ingestion.

A machine-readable opt-out is a rights-reservation notice formatted so software can automatically detect it and act on it. Instead of relying on a human to read a legal page, the signal is embedded in a structured form that ingestion systems, crawlers, or data pipelines can recognize during collection or processing.

In cyber security and AI governance, this matters because it turns policy into an enforceable control. A model builder can scan for opt-outs before crawling a site, block disallowed sources, or tag content so it is excluded from training, indexing, or fine-tuning. Defenders may also log these signals as part of provenance and compliance records. If the control is ignored, it can become a risk: unauthorized ingestion may create legal exposure, while attackers could try to hide, strip, or spoof opt-out markers to influence what data enters a system.
