Machine-readable metadata

Structured information embedded so systems can process and check it automatically.

Machine-readable metadata is structured information attached to a file, message, or record so software can parse it automatically. Instead of only being readable by people, it uses fields such as creator, timestamp, MIME type, labels, policy tags, or hashes. In cyber security, this metadata helps systems decide what to trust, block, log, or route. It is also used for provenance, because defenders need to know where content came from and whether it was changed.

Attackers often abuse metadata by stripping it, forging it, or hiding malicious intent inside fields that scanners and automation rely on. Defenders use signed metadata, schema validation, and integrity checks to catch tampering and support moderation, detection, and access control. In content platforms, cloud systems, and email gateways, accurate machine-readable metadata makes automated defenses possible; bad metadata can break rankings, mislabel content, or let suspicious material pass as legitimate.
