Machine-readable labeling

Embedding disclosure data in a format software can detect automatically, supporting transparency for synthetic content.

Machine-readable labeling is the practice of embedding disclosure data into media or files in a format that software can automatically detect and process. For synthetic images, video, text, or audio, the label may indicate that content was generated or modified by AI, who created it, or what provenance metadata is attached. Unlike a visible watermark or a human-readable note, machine-readable labels are designed for automated checks across platforms, workflows, and moderation systems.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers often hide, spoof, or strip context from digital content. Machine-readable labels help defenders verify origin, support trust decisions, and flag manipulated or synthetic material before it spreads. They are used in content provenance systems, internal publishing controls, and platform moderation pipelines. However, labels can be removed, forged, or lost if files are re-encoded, so they should be paired with signatures, provenance records, and policy enforcement rather than treated as proof by themselves.
