Local network adjacency

The condition where an attacker must be on the same LAN or Wi-Fi segment as the target device.

Local network adjacency means an attacker must already be on the same LAN, subnet, or Wi-Fi segment as the target device. It is a common requirement for “local-only” vulnerabilities, where the device does not need to be reachable from the public internet.

This matters because local access can still be realistic in homes and small offices. A compromised laptop, an untrusted guest device, or poor network segmentation can place an attacker close enough to probe cameras, printers, routers, or IoT devices. In attacks, adjacency may allow data leaks, credential interception, device discovery abuse, or unauthorized management traffic. In defense, teams reduce this risk by isolating IoT devices on restricted networks, tightening Wi-Fi access, and limiting what services are exposed to nearby hosts.
