Local discovery

A device mechanism that advertises or reveals information to nearby systems on the same network.

Local discovery is a device mechanism that advertises or reveals information to nearby systems on the same network. It is common in IoT gear, printers, cameras, and smart-home devices, where it helps apps find devices automatically and learn details such as model, status, or setup data.

In cyber security, local discovery matters because “local” does not mean “safe.” If discovery responses expose too much metadata, an attacker on the same LAN can use them for reconnaissance, locate sensitive devices, or collect data that should require authentication. In some cases, discovery traffic can leak geolocation-related information or other identifiers that help map a target environment. Defenders reduce this risk by limiting what discovery messages disclose, isolating untrusted devices with network segmentation, and requiring authentication for management functions instead of trusting anyone nearby.
