Live Verification

A test that checks whether a discovered credential is still valid and usable.

Live verification is a security test used to determine whether a discovered credential, such as an API key, token, or password, is still valid and can actually authenticate. Instead of treating every leaked string as equally urgent, defenders make a read-only check against the target service or an adjacent validation endpoint to see whether the secret still works.

This matters because many exposed secrets are stale, revoked, or fake. A live credential, however, can give an attacker immediate access to cloud services, source code, data stores, or automation pipelines. In defensive workflows, live verification helps reduce false positives and prioritize response: a dormant secret may be logged for cleanup, while an active one triggers rotation, revocation, and investigation. Attackers also use the same idea during credential stuffing, secret hunting, and post-exposure validation to focus effort on usable access rather than noise.
