License-plate reader

an automated system that captures and indexes vehicle plate data.

A license-plate reader is an automated system that captures vehicle plates with cameras and OCR software, then indexes the results with time, date, and often location. These systems are used in parking, law enforcement, tolling, and private security. Because they turn a passing vehicle into a searchable record, they create a sensitive stream of digital evidence rather than just a photo archive.

In cyber security, license-plate readers matter because their databases, APIs, and operator consoles can be targeted like any other data system. Attackers may try to steal location histories, tamper with records, or abuse weak access controls to track people or hide a vehicle’s movements. Defenders reduce risk with encryption, role-based access, audit logs, retention limits, and integrity controls that make records harder to alter. When these controls are weak, the system can become a surveillance risk and a legal liability.
