Layering

Moving money through multiple transactions to obscure its source and destination.

Layering is a money-laundering technique that moves illicit funds through many transactions to hide where the money came from and where it is going. The goal is to break the trail by creating distance between the original crime and the final cash-out point. This can involve rapid transfers between accounts, payments through intermediaries, purchases of assets, or movement across different financial services.

In cyber-enabled fraud, layering matters because the laundering phase is often what makes stolen value hard to recover. Defenders look for patterns such as unusual transaction velocity, repeated account hopping, fragmented payments, and behavior that does not match a customer’s normal activity. Banks, payment processors, and compliance teams use transaction monitoring and graph analysis to spot these chains. Layering is not proof of crime by itself, but it is a strong signal that funds may be being concealed.
