Layered Verification

A defense approach that combines multiple checks instead of trusting one detector alone.

Layered verification is a security approach that checks the same claim, file, or event with more than one method. Instead of trusting a single detector, it combines signals such as metadata review, signature checks, reputation data, behavioral analysis, and human review. The goal is to reduce false positives, false negatives, and the risk of being fooled by a forged or incomplete signal.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers often evade one control while leaving another clue behind. For example, a malicious attachment may look clean to one scanner but fail sandbox analysis or match a known phishing pattern. The same idea applies to synthetic media and provenance checks: one detector may be uncertain, but multiple independent checks can provide stronger confidence. Layered verification does not guarantee truth, but it makes deception harder and decisions more defensible.
