Jacques Lacan was a French psychoanalytic theorist whose work argues that subjectivity is formed through language and social structure, not just private thought. In Lacan’s view, words do more than describe reality: they help organize identity, desire, and the way people recognize authority, meaning, and selfhood.
That matters in cyber security because many attacks work by manipulating language and symbolic trust. Phishing emails, fake support chats, and AI-generated messages can feel convincing even when they are empty of real intent. Lacan helps explain why: humans often treat fluent language as evidence of a subject behind it. Defenders can use this insight to design safer interfaces, user training, and review processes that question who is speaking, how authority is being staged, and whether the message is merely persuasive text or a trustworthy source.
