KQL, or Kusto Query Language, is the query language used in Microsoft security and analytics platforms to search large telemetry datasets. Defenders use it to filter events, join records, build detections, and spot patterns across logs such as network activity, device events, and alerts.
In cyber security, KQL matters because the quality of a hunt depends on the query logic as much as the data itself. A KQL filter can narrow results quickly, but a too-specific condition may hide relevant evidence. For example, if an analyst relies on one field to classify network traffic, suspicious connections can fall outside the search even though the query runs correctly. Good KQL hunting usually combines multiple fields, tests assumptions, and validates results against raw telemetry.
