Keychain Services

macOS APIs and storage designed to keep passwords, keys, certificates, and other secrets protected.

Keychain Services is the macOS API and secret-storage system used to store passwords, private keys, certificates, tokens, and other sensitive items. Applications call it to save credentials securely instead of writing them to files, environment variables, or application settings. Access is controlled by the user session, application permissions, and item-specific rules.

In cyber security, Keychain Services matters because attackers often look for the secrets that unlock everything else: SSH keys, browser logins, cloud credentials, and signing material. Good defenders use it to reduce plaintext exposure and centralize secret handling, but it is not a magic shield. If malware runs with the right user context, abuses a trusted app, or escapes a sandbox to reach the host, it may still try to query or steal accessible Keychain items. For that reason, secret placement and access policy are part of endpoint hardening.
