Key Management Service, or KMS, is Microsoft’s enterprise activation system for Windows and some Office products. Instead of activating each device individually, a company runs a managed KMS host on its network and client systems renew activation by contacting it periodically. This makes large-scale licensing easier to operate.
In cyber security, KMS matters because it is part of the trust chain for many endpoints. Attackers have abused KMS with fake activation servers, volume-license key leaks, and software that mimics a legitimate host to bypass licensing controls. Defenders monitor KMS traffic, restrict access to approved servers, and validate that activation requests come from authorized devices. When hardware-backed checks such as TPM attestation are added, KMS can also help verify that a device is not just on the network, but is a real, trusted machine.
