Kernel write

A memory modification operation inside the operating system kernel, often highly dangerous if abused.

A kernel write is a memory modification operation performed inside the operating system kernel. Because the kernel runs with the highest privileges on the machine, even a small write to the wrong address can corrupt core data structures, change access controls, or redirect execution. In practice, a kernel write is one of the most dangerous outcomes of a low-level bug.

Attackers often seek a kernel write after triggering a race condition, out-of-bounds access, or type confusion in a driver or system interface. If the write can be controlled, it may be used to overwrite credentials, disable security checks, or build a path to root access and container escape. Defenders treat any potential kernel write as a critical issue: patch the vulnerable code, reduce exposure to unused kernel features, and monitor for unusual crashes or privilege changes that may indicate exploitation.
