Journaling filesystem

A filesystem that records changes in a log so recovery after a crash is more reliable.

A journaling filesystem is a filesystem that writes upcoming metadata changes to a journal, or log, before applying them to the main disk structures. If the system crashes, loses power, or is forced to reboot, the journal can be replayed so the filesystem returns to a consistent state more reliably than with a non-journaling design.

In cyber security, this matters because storage integrity is part of system trust. Journaling helps reduce corruption that could hide evidence, break services, or create recovery problems after sabotage, hardware failure, or ransomware-triggered disruption. Defenders value it for faster crash recovery and safer reboot behavior, while attackers may target filesystem bugs or abuse repeated crashes to cause denial of service. Journaling does not prevent data theft or tampering by itself, but it limits damage from unexpected interruption and makes large, busy systems easier to restore.
