Job title

A formal role label that can describe hierarchy or function, but not always real capability.

A job title is a formal label for a person’s role, such as analyst, manager, or administrator. In security systems, titles often appear in email signatures, HR records, identity directories, and access review workflows. They can describe hierarchy or function, but they do not prove what a person can actually do, what systems they can use, or whether they should be trusted with sensitive tasks.

That matters in cyber security because attackers use job titles for social engineering. A phishing email that impersonates a CEO, finance lead, or IT admin can pressure staff into sharing credentials, approving payments, or changing access. Defenders also use titles in role-based access control and privileged access reviews, but titles alone are a weak control. Good practice is to base permissions on verified duties, approvals, and recent activity, not just the label on a badge or directory entry.
