Java support

a built-in runtime feature that can expand what an office app is able to execute.

Java support is an optional runtime feature in some office applications that lets the program use the Java platform to run additional components, scripts, or extensions. Because it adds a general-purpose execution environment, it can expand what the application is able to do beyond simply opening and displaying documents.

In cyber security, that matters because any extra runtime feature can become part of the attack surface. If a document, template, or embedded object can reach Java-enabled functionality, it may trigger behavior that users do not expect from a “read-only” file. Defenders reduce this risk by disabling Java support when it is not needed, limiting extensions, and reviewing office-suite settings as part of hardening. In practice, attackers look for these enabled features as a way to turn trusted software into an execution path.
