IT roles are jobs that manage an organization’s technology environment. They include system administrators, help-desk staff, network engineers, cloud operators, database admins, and other technical support or infrastructure positions. These people keep servers, endpoints, accounts, networks, and business applications running.
In cybersecurity, IT roles matter because they control many of the settings attackers try to abuse: passwords, access rights, patches, backups, remote access, and logging. A weak IT process can create an easy path for phishing, credential theft, privilege escalation, or ransomware. Defenders also rely on IT teams to deploy updates, isolate systems, rotate credentials, and restore service during an incident. In practice, good security is often a shared job between security staff and IT roles, not a separate function.
