Interoperability standards

Rules that help different systems, platforms, or organizations work together reliably.

Interoperability standards are shared rules, formats, and protocols that let different systems, platforms, or organizations exchange data and function together reliably. They can define how APIs behave, how identities are verified, what data fields mean, or how industrial devices communicate.

In cyber security, these standards matter because modern environments depend on many connected vendors and services. Good standards reduce integration errors, make logging and monitoring more consistent, and help defenders enforce access control across cloud, enterprise, and supply-chain systems. But they can also expand risk: if a common protocol or standard is misconfigured, attackers may abuse it to move laterally, impersonate services, or inject malicious data. Defenders use interoperability standards to build secure-by-design architectures, automate trust decisions, and keep collaboration possible without creating fragile one-off connections.
