An intake is the part of a system that draws in water, air, or another resource needed for operation. In engineering, it may feed cooling water to a plant, air to a ventilation unit, or process fluid into a pump. If the intake is blocked, contaminated, or overloaded, the whole system can slow down or fail even when the software and controls are working normally.
In cyber security, intake matters because physical dependencies are part of the attack surface. Defenders often focus on malware, credentials, and network traffic, but an obstruction at an intake can still create an outage, trigger alarms, or force safe shutdowns. Real-world resilience planning therefore includes monitoring flow, protecting screens and filters, and adding redundancy so a single blockage does not cascade into downtime.
