An industrial pilot is a limited real-world trial that places a technology in a live production setting before full rollout. Unlike a lab test, it runs against real users, machines, data, and operational constraints, so it reveals whether the system is reliable, safe, and maintainable under normal conditions.
In cyber security, pilots matter because they are often the first time a new platform touches production networks and sensitive information. That makes them a common point for misconfigurations, weak access controls, and overexposed telemetry. Attackers may target pilot environments because they are less hardened than mature deployments, while defenders use pilots to validate segmentation, logging, identity controls, patching, and backup recovery before scaling. A well-run pilot creates evidence; a poorly governed one can leak data, widen the attack surface, and carry insecure settings into full deployment.
