IME

Input Method Editor, software that lets users type complex scripts such as Chinese on a standard keyboard.

An IME, or Input Method Editor, is software that helps users type complex scripts such as Chinese, Japanese, or Korean on a standard keyboard. Instead of sending each key directly as a character, the IME interprets keystrokes, converts them into the right symbols, and often manages candidate windows, language models, and special input behaviors.

IME software matters in cyber security because it sits close to the desktop, the browser, and sometimes the system shell. That gives it powerful functionality, but also a large attack surface. If an IME mishandles links, custom protocols, files, or helper processes, a simple user action can become code execution or privilege abuse. Defenders should treat IMEs like other client applications: keep them patched, restrict unnecessary extensions, monitor child processes and command lines, and review any unexpected launches after clicking content. Security teams often miss IMEs because they look like language utilities, not security-sensitive software.
