Identity Separation

Giving workflows their own credentials and access boundaries instead of shared ones.

Identity separation means giving each workflow, automation, or service its own account and access permissions rather than relying on a person’s credentials or credentials shared across tools. This creates a distinct identity that can be limited to specific systems, data, and actions.

In cyber security, separate identities improve least-privilege enforcement, accountability, and incident response: teams can see what a workflow accessed and revoke its access without disrupting a person’s account. For example, a lead-routing automation might receive permission to read only required customer fields and post updates to one approved channel. If an automation uses broad shared credentials instead, its actions are harder to trace and a compromise may expose more systems. Inventorying workflow identities, reviewing their permissions, and rotating or revoking credentials when they are no longer needed helps keep access aligned with the task.
