Hypervisor Escape

A class of attack where code crosses from a virtual machine to the underlying host.

Hypervisor escape is an attack in which code running inside a virtual machine breaks out of the guest and reaches the host or hypervisor layer. In a healthy virtualized system, the guest is isolated from the underlying platform by a strict trust boundary. An escape means that boundary failed, letting an attacker influence other virtual machines, host services, or the management plane that controls them.

This matters because the host usually has far more privilege than any single guest. A successful escape can turn a contained compromise into a platform-level incident. Real-world escapes often rely on memory-corruption bugs, device-emulation flaws, or virtualization driver mistakes such as errors in virtual network or storage components. Defenders reduce the risk by patching hypervisors and guest tools quickly, limiting administrative privileges inside VMs, and monitoring for unusual activity that suggests guest-to-host interaction. In practice, hypervisor escape is one of the most serious failures in virtualization security.
