Hybrid certificate

A certificate design that combines traditional and post-quantum cryptographic components during migration.

A hybrid certificate is a transitional certificate design that combines a traditional public-key algorithm, such as RSA or ECDSA, with a post-quantum cryptographic component. The goal is to let systems keep working with today’s software while adding protection against future quantum-capable attacks. In practice, a hybrid certificate can help organizations migrate gradually, because not every client, proxy, load balancer, or hardware security module will support post-quantum cryptography at the same time.

Hybrid certificates matter in cyber security because certificate infrastructure underpins TLS, device identity, code signing, and internal trust chains. They are useful for defense, but they also create new compatibility and policy challenges: validation logic may be more complex, and every relying system must be tested carefully. Attackers may try to exploit weak interoperability, misconfigured trust stores, or incomplete rollout paths. Defenders use hybrid certificates as part of a broader crypto-agility plan, pairing them with inventory, strong lifecycle management, and strict controls over issuance and revocation.
