Human perception

the way the brain interprets light, motion, and continuity.

Human perception is the brain’s interpretation of light, motion, contrast, and continuity. In practice, people do not see raw data; they see a simplified picture built from signals that the mind stitches together. That is why rapid changes, visual tricks, and context can strongly influence what someone thinks they are seeing.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers often exploit perception rather than code. Phishing pages use familiar logos and layouts to look trusted, while malicious pop-ups or spoofed warnings mimic legitimate system messages. Defenders also rely on perception when designing security alerts, dashboards, and visual indicators so users can notice real risk quickly. Understanding human perception helps explain why convincing deception can succeed, and why clear, consistent visual design is a security control as well as a usability feature.
