HTTP 403

A web status code meaning the server understood the request but refused to authorize it.

HTTP 403 is a web response code that means the server understood the request but refused to authorize it. In practice, this often appears when a user lacks permission, when access is blocked by policy, or when a site is intentionally denying a request after authentication checks, IP filtering, or rule matching.

In cyber security, 403 responses matter because they can signal both defense and deception. A legitimate 403 may show that access controls are working, but attackers can also use the code to make infrastructure look closed, uninteresting, or inactive while keeping some paths functional. Analysts should not assume a 403 means nothing is there; it may be a deliberate filter, a geofence, or a camouflage layer in a command-and-control setup. Reviewing the request patterns, headers, and follow-on behavior helps distinguish normal authorization failures from malicious hiding tactics.
